GNU Tar versions through 1.35 are vulnerable to a file overwrite attack via directory traversal using a two-step extraction process. An attacker can first extract a TAR archive containing a symlink with a relative path to a critical directory, then extract a second archive that uses the symlink path to overwrite critical files. This bypasses the usual protection against '..' in member names within a single archive. This vulnerability can affect server applications or installation processes that automatically extract multiple user-supplied TAR archives into the same directory.

GNU Tar through version 1.35 allows an attacker to overwrite files by exploiting directory traversal in a crafted TAR archive extraction process involving two steps. The first archive creates a symlink pointing to a critical directory using a relative path containing '..'. The second archive contains a file path starting with the symlink name and ending with a critical file name. When extracted sequentially into the same directory, the second extraction follows the symlink and overwrites the critical file, bypassing protections that block '..' in a single archive.
