A medium severity vulnerability (CVE-2025-71288) in the Linux kernel's MediaTek SMI driver caused device reference leaks during common probe failures such as probe deferral or driver unbind. This flaw could lead to resource leaks affecting system stability. The vulnerability is resolved in Linux kernel versions 6.8.0 and later. Multiple other Linux kernel security issues affecting various architectures and subsystems were also fixed in the same update. A patch is available and should be applied via standard system updates, which require a reboot and recompilation of third-party kernel modules due to ABI changes.
