A heap-based buffer overflow vulnerability exists in the SOHM list-index deserialization code of HDF5 through version 2.1.1 on all platforms. This flaw allows attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) by crafting an HDF5 file with a shared-message list index that declares a num_messages count exceeding list_max, leading to out-of-bounds heap reads and writes during deserialization and checksum verification.
