A vulnerability in the Linux kernel's block layer subsystem was resolved that involved uninitialized memory in the auto-generated integrity buffer for writes. Specifically, when protection information (PI) is generated and the PI tuple size is nonzero but smaller than the metadata size, the remainder of the metadata buffer was left uninitialized. This could allow userspace or anyone with physical access to the storage device to read uninitialized memory. The issue has been fixed by ensuring the entire integrity buffer is zeroed before use.

The Linux kernel vulnerability CVE-2026-23007 concerns the block layer's handling of the auto-generated integrity buffer for write operations. The integrity buffer must be fully initialized before being passed to the underlying block device to prevent leakage of uninitialized memory. While the PI portion of the buffer is properly initialized or zeroed if PI generation is disabled, the vulnerability arises when the metadata size exceeds the PI tuple size, leaving the 'opaque' remainder uninitialized. This flaw could lead to exposure of uninitialized kernel memory to userspace or physical attackers. The fix generalizes the BLK_INTEGRITY_CSUM_NONE check to cover cases where metadata is larger than the PI tuple, ensuring the entire buffer is zeroed.
