A vulnerability in the Linux kernel's ksmbd subsystem allowed clients to bypass permission checks when modifying the sparse attribute of files via the FSCTL_SET_SPARSE operation. This flaw permitted clients on read-only shares to change file attributes improperly and allowed clients without proper write permissions on writable shares to modify the sparse attribute. The issue was fixed by adding both share-level writable checks and per-handle access checks to prevent unauthorized modifications.
