NLnet Labs Unbound versions 1.7.0 through 1.25.1 with DNSCrypt support enabled contain a vulnerability where a misconfiguration in the 'dnscrypt:' clause causes Unbound to dereference garbage data. This occurs when more 'dnscrypt-provider-cert:' files are listed than matching 'dnscrypt-secret-key:' files, leading to a server crash upon receiving a specific UDP datagram. The issue results in a denial of service due to server termination triggered by unauthenticated client input.

In NLnet Labs Unbound versions 1.7.0 up to and including 1.25.1, when the 'dnscrypt:' configuration clause lists more 'dnscrypt-provider-cert:' files than there are matching 'dnscrypt-secret-key:' files, Unbound fills only the matched prefix slots and leaves the remaining slots filled with '0xdb' bytes from libsodium's allocator. Unbound then iterates over the number of certificate files rather than the actual slots, causing it to access these garbage-filled slots. An unauthenticated client can send a single UDP datagram of at least 68 bytes starting with eight '0xdb' bytes to the DNSCrypt port, triggering a garbage dereference that crashes the server. This vulnerability requires Unbound to be compiled with DNSCrypt support enabled ('--enable-dnscrypt').
