A vulnerability in the Linux kernel tracing subsystem was resolved that prevented a NULL return from the hist_field_name() function on string truncation. The function previously could return NULL when truncation occurred in a fully-qualified VAR_REF/EXPR case, leading to unexpected NULL dereferences in strcat() and strcmp() calls. This issue arises because the field name derived from a histogram variable name has no length limit, allowing a long variable name to trigger the truncation path. The fix ensures that on overflow, the field name remains an empty string instead of NULL, preventing potential crashes or undefined behavior.
