A heap-based buffer overflow vulnerability exists in GIMP's ICO file loader due to an integer overflow when processing ICO files with embedded PNG images. This flaw can lead to arbitrary code execution or application crashes if a malicious ICO file is opened.

CVE-2026-90948 describes a vulnerability in GIMP's ICO file loader where an integer overflow occurs during the calculation of the buffer size needed to decode embedded PNG images within ICO files. This results in an undersized buffer allocation, causing a heap-based buffer overflow when pixel data is written. A remote attacker can exploit this by crafting a malicious ICO file that triggers this overflow, potentially leading to arbitrary code execution or a crash of the application.
