Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-20338 is a high-severity vulnerability in ClamAV's zip archive parser caused by improper memory handling when processing zip file contents. An attacker can exploit this by submitting a specially crafted zip file for scanning, triggering a memory double-free that causes the ClamAV scanning process to crash, resulting in a denial-of-service condition. The vulnerability does not impact confidentiality or integrity but affects availability by terminating the scanning service.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation results in a denial-of-service condition on the affected device by crashing the ClamAV scanning process. There is no impact on confidentiality or integrity of data. The vulnerability can be triggered remotely without authentication by submitting malicious zip files for scanning.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until a fix is available, consider restricting or monitoring the submission of zip files for scanning to reduce exposure to crafted malicious archives.
