AI-suggested

Upgrade Nix to version 2.34.7 or later, or one of the other fixed versions listed (2.33.6, 2.32.8, 2.31.5, 2.30.5, 2.29.4, 2.28.7). For Lix, upgrade to 2.95.2 or later (including 2.94.2, 2.93.4). Restrict access to the Nix daemon by configuring the allowed-users setting to limit which users can connect, reducing the attack surface. These updates contain fixes that prevent the unbounded recursion and stack overflow.

Description

A vulnerability in Nix before 2.34.7 and Lix before 2.95.2 involves unbounded recursion in the NAR parser, leading to a stack-to-heap overflow when run on a coroutine stack. This overflow can overwrite heap memory and potentially allow arbitrary code execution as the Nix daemon, which runs as root in multi-user setups. The flaw affects users able to connect to the daemon, with default settings allowing all users. Fixed versions have been released for both Nix and Lix.
