This vulnerability is fixed in Thunderbird versions 153.6 and 159. Users and administrators should upgrade to at least Thunderbird 153.6 to mitigate this issue. No additional mitigation steps are required once the client is updated.
Description
A vulnerability in Thunderbird allowed clicking on news: or snews: links referencing a message-ID to cause the client to connect automatically to the specified host and port without user consent, even if the server was not configured. The message-ID could include line breaks that were sent unmodified, enabling crafted links to send arbitrary commands to reachable services. Additionally, snews: links connected without TLS, exposing data in transit. This issue was fixed in Thunderbird versions 153.6 and 159.
