This vulnerability has been fixed in Thunderbird versions 153.6 and 159. Users and administrators should upgrade to at least Thunderbird 153.6 to mitigate this issue. No additional mitigation steps are required once the update is applied.
Description
A vulnerability in Thunderbird's Matrix login process allowed the application to use a homeserver address provided in the server's login response without validation. A malicious or compromised homeserver could supply a file: URL, causing Thunderbird to redirect Matrix requests to local files or, on Windows, to an attacker-controlled network share. This could lead to leakage of the user's NTLM credentials on Windows systems. The issue affects Thunderbird on Windows only and was fixed in Thunderbird versions 153.6 and 159.
