Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: MiniDVBLinux
Product: MiniDVBLinux Change Root Password PoC

Description

MiniDVBLinux 5.4 contains an authentication bypass vulnerability that allows remote attackers to change the root password without authentication. Attackers can send crafted POST requests to the system setup endpoint with modified SYSTEM_PASSWORD parameters to reset root credentials.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2023-53771 is an authentication bypass vulnerability affecting MiniDVBLinux versions up to 5.4. The vulnerability arises because the system setup endpoint responsible for changing the root password does not enforce any authentication checks. Attackers can exploit this by sending crafted HTTP POST requests containing manipulated SYSTEM_PASSWORD parameters, which the system accepts without verifying the requester's identity. This allows an unauthenticated remote attacker to reset the root password, effectively gaining full administrative control over the affected device. The vulnerability is categorized under CWE-306 (Missing Authentication for Critical Function), highlighting the absence of proper access control on a sensitive operation. The CVSS 4.0 base score is 9.3 (critical), reflecting the vulnerability's ease of exploitation (no privileges or user interaction needed), network attack vector, and high impact on confidentiality and integrity due to root access compromise. No patches or fixes are currently listed, and no known exploits have been reported in the wild, but the potential for severe damage is significant. MiniDVBLinux is commonly used in digital video broadcasting and satellite receiver devices, which may be part of critical communication infrastructure.

Potential Impact

For European organizations, this vulnerability poses a significant risk, especially those relying on MiniDVBLinux-based devices in broadcasting, satellite communications, or related infrastructure. Unauthorized root access can lead to full system compromise, allowing attackers to manipulate broadcast content, disrupt services, exfiltrate sensitive data, or use the compromised devices as pivot points for further network intrusion. Given the critical nature of broadcasting infrastructure in Europe, including public broadcasters and private media companies, exploitation could result in service outages, reputational damage, and regulatory penalties under GDPR if personal data is affected. The lack of authentication means attackers can exploit the vulnerability remotely without prior access, increasing the threat surface. Additionally, compromised devices could be leveraged in botnets or for launching attacks against other targets, amplifying the broader cybersecurity risk within European networks.

Mitigation Recommendations

Since no official patches are currently available, organizations should implement immediate compensating controls. These include restricting network access to MiniDVBLinux management interfaces using firewalls or network segmentation to limit exposure to trusted administrators only. Employ VPNs or secure tunnels for remote management to prevent unauthorized external access. Monitor network traffic for suspicious POST requests targeting the system setup endpoint and implement intrusion detection/prevention systems (IDS/IPS) with custom rules to detect and block exploitation attempts. Change default credentials on all devices and enforce strong password policies to reduce the impact if the vulnerability is exploited. Regularly audit device configurations and logs for unauthorized changes. Engage with the vendor or community for updates and patches, and plan for timely deployment once available. Consider replacing vulnerable devices with updated or alternative solutions if immediate patching is not feasible.
