VulnerabilityCVE-2024-11284cvecve-2024-11284cwe-639
Published: Fri Mar 14 2025 (03/14/2025, 04:22:32 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Product: WP JobHunt

Description

The WP JobHunt plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to privilege escalation via account takeover in all versions up to, and including, 6.9. This is due to the plugin not properly validating a user's identity prior to updating their password through the account_settings_save_callback() function. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to change arbitrary user's passwords, including administrators, and leverage that to gain access to their account.

Technical Analysis

The WP JobHunt plugin for WordPress contains an authorization bypass vulnerability (CWE-639) in the account_settings_save_callback() function. This function fails to properly verify the identity of the user requesting a password change, allowing unauthenticated attackers to reset passwords of arbitrary users, including administrators. This leads to privilege escalation and potential full account takeover. The vulnerability affects all versions up to and including 6.9. The CVSS 3.1 base score is 9.8 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H), reflecting network attack vector, low attack complexity, no privileges or user interaction required, and high impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation allows an unauthenticated attacker to change any user's password, including administrators, resulting in full account takeover. This compromises the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the affected WordPress site and potentially all data and functionality accessible by the compromised accounts.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until an official fix is released, restrict access to the plugin's functionality where possible and monitor for suspicious activity. Avoid using affected versions of WP JobHunt in sensitive environments. Follow vendor updates closely for an official patch or temporary mitigation.
