Description

CVE-2024-39476 is a medium severity vulnerability in the Linux kernel's md/raid5 subsystem that causes a deadlock. The deadlock occurs because the raid5d() kernel thread waits for itself to clear the MD_SB_CHANGE_PENDING flag while holding a mutex, leading to a 100% CPU usage hang. This issue affects certain Linux kernel versions prior to fixed releases in the 5.4 and 5.15 series. The problem has been resolved by changing raid5d() behavior to skip issuing IO if the flag is still set, allowing the daemon thread to be woken up properly when the mutex is released.
