AI-suggested
A patch is available and has been released in Linux kernel versions 6.8.0-1015.16~22.04.1 and later. Users and administrators should update to these fixed kernel versions to remediate the issue. No additional mitigation steps are indicated beyond applying the official fix.
Description
CVE-2024-40972 is a vulnerability in the Linux kernel's ext4 filesystem where the ext4_xattr_set_entry() function creates extended attribute (EA) inodes while holding a buffer lock. This improper locking sequence can lead to deadlocks, especially if the filesystem is corrupted and quota files contain xattr blocks as data blocks. The issue has been fixed by moving the EA inode allocation out of the buffer lock context.
