What to do
AI-suggested
Organizations should immediately audit their OpenBSD systems to identify versions 7.4 and 7.5 running vixie cron. Until an official patch is released, administrators should restrict network access to cron services, ensuring they are not exposed to untrusted networks. Implement strict firewall rules and network segmentation to limit potential attack vectors. Review and sanitize all inputs that could influence cron job execution to prevent injection or exploitation attempts. Monitor system logs for unusual cron activity or crashes indicative of exploitation attempts. Employ runtime memory protection mechanisms such as Address Space Layout Randomization (ASLR) and stack canaries if supported. Prepare to apply vendor patches promptly once available and consider upgrading to newer OpenBSD versions where the vulnerability is fixed. Additionally, conduct regular vulnerability scanning and penetration testing focused on cron and related services to detect potential exploitation attempts early.
Description
cron/entry.c in vixie cron before 9cc8ab1, as used in OpenBSD 7.4 and 7.5, allows a heap-based buffer underflow and memory corruption. NOTE: this issue was introduced during a May 2023 refactoring.
