A patch is available and has been incorporated into multiple Linux kernel versions, including Ubuntu kernels. Users should update their Linux kernel to one of the fixed versions listed (e.g., 3.13.0-204.255, 4.4.0-1141.147, 4.15.0-1186.201~14.04.1, and others). The vendor advisory confirms the availability of official fixes. No additional mitigation steps are required beyond applying these updates.
Description
CVE-2024-43900 is a use-after-free vulnerability in the Linux kernel's media subsystem, specifically in the xc2028 driver within the load_firmware_cb() function. The flaw occurs when a struct tuner allocated during module initialization is freed due to initialization failure, but a worker thread later accesses this freed memory, causing a use-after-free condition. The issue has been fixed by adding a check in load_firmware_cb() to verify the tuner pointer before use. This vulnerability affects multiple Linux kernel versions prior to fixed releases and has a high severity rating.
