A patch is available and has been released in multiple Linux kernel versions including 4.4.0-1139.145 and 4.15.0-1184.199~14.04.1. Users and administrators should update affected Linux kernel versions to these or later fixed releases to remediate the vulnerability. Systems with init-on-alloc enabled are not affected. No additional mitigation steps are required beyond applying the official kernel updates.
Description
CVE-2024-44947 is a medium severity information leak vulnerability in the Linux kernel's FUSE subsystem. The issue arises because fuse_notify_store() does not fully initialize page contents beyond the end-of-file before marking the page uptodate, unlike fuse_do_readpage(). This can expose uninitialized memory contents to userspace via mmap() on systems that do not enable init-on-alloc. The vulnerability affects certain Linux kernel versions prior to fixed releases. A patch is available and has been applied in multiple kernel versions.
