Technical Analysis

CVE-2025-22397 is a path traversal vulnerability classified under CWE-22 affecting multiple versions of Dell's Integrated Dell Remote Access Controller (iDRAC) across 9 14G, 15G, 16G, and 10 17G hardware generations. The vulnerability arises from improper validation of file pathnames, allowing an attacker with high-level privileges and remote access to traverse directories outside the intended restricted scope. This can lead to unauthorized access to sensitive files or system components, potentially exposing confidential information or enabling further compromise. The vulnerability does not require user interaction but does require the attacker to have high privileges, such as administrative or equivalent access to the iDRAC interface. The CVSS v3.1 base score of 6.7 reflects a medium severity, with network attack vector, low attack complexity, and no user interaction needed. The impact is high on confidentiality due to unauthorized file access, low on integrity, and high on availability, as exploitation could disrupt remote management capabilities. No public exploits are currently known, but the vulnerability is publicly disclosed and patched versions are expected or available. iDRAC is widely used in enterprise and data center environments for out-of-band management of Dell servers, making this vulnerability significant for organizations relying on Dell hardware for critical operations.

Potential Impact

For European organizations, the impact of CVE-2025-22397 can be substantial, particularly for those operating large-scale data centers, cloud service providers, and critical infrastructure sectors such as finance, telecommunications, and government. Unauthorized access via path traversal could lead to exposure of sensitive configuration files, credentials, or system binaries, potentially enabling attackers to escalate privileges or disrupt remote management functions. This could result in downtime, data breaches, or loss of control over critical server infrastructure. Given the reliance on Dell iDRAC for remote server management, exploitation could impair incident response and recovery efforts. The medium severity rating suggests that while exploitation requires high privileges, the consequences of a successful attack could be severe enough to warrant urgent attention. Additionally, the lack of known exploits in the wild currently provides a window for proactive mitigation before widespread exploitation occurs.

Mitigation Recommendations

1. Immediately apply official Dell patches or firmware updates addressing CVE-2025-22397 as they become available. 2. Restrict network access to iDRAC interfaces using firewalls and network segmentation to limit exposure to trusted administrators only. 3. Enforce strong authentication mechanisms, including multi-factor authentication, for accessing iDRAC management consoles. 4. Regularly audit and monitor iDRAC logs for unusual access patterns or attempts to access unauthorized files. 5. Disable or limit unnecessary iDRAC features or services that are not required for operational needs. 6. Implement strict role-based access controls (RBAC) to minimize the number of users with high privileges on iDRAC devices. 7. Conduct vulnerability scanning and penetration testing focused on remote management interfaces to detect potential exploitation attempts. 8. Maintain an inventory of all Dell iDRAC versions deployed and prioritize patching based on exposure and criticality. 9. Educate IT staff on the risks associated with remote management interfaces and the importance of timely patching and access controls.
