Vendor/Project: IBM
Product: Content Navigator

Description

IBM Content Navigator 3.0.11, 3.0.15, 3.1.0, and 3.2.0 could expose the directory listing of the application upon using an application URL. Application files and folders are visible in the browser to a user; however, the contents of the files cannot be read obtained or modified.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2025-27906 is a vulnerability classified under CWE-548 (Exposure of Information Through Directory Listing) affecting IBM Content Navigator versions 3.0.11, 3.0.15, 3.1.0, and 3.2.0. The flaw allows an unauthenticated attacker to access directory listings by navigating to specific application URLs, revealing the structure of files and folders within the application. Although the contents of the files cannot be read, modified, or obtained, the exposure of directory information can provide valuable intelligence to attackers for planning further attacks such as targeted exploitation or social engineering. The vulnerability is remotely exploitable over the network without requiring privileges or user interaction, which increases its risk profile. The CVSS v3.1 base score is 5.3, reflecting a medium severity level primarily due to the confidentiality impact and ease of exploitation. No public exploits or active exploitation have been reported to date. IBM has not yet provided official patches, so mitigation relies on configuration changes such as disabling directory listing on the web server hosting the application and restricting access to the affected URLs. This vulnerability is particularly relevant to organizations relying on IBM Content Navigator for document management and workflow, as directory exposure could reveal sensitive internal structures or deployment details.

Potential Impact

For European organizations, this vulnerability poses a moderate confidentiality risk by exposing internal directory structures of IBM Content Navigator deployments. While direct data theft or modification is not possible, the information leakage can aid attackers in crafting more effective attacks, including phishing, targeted malware, or exploitation of other vulnerabilities. Organizations handling sensitive or regulated data may face compliance risks if directory exposure leads to further compromise. The impact on integrity and availability is negligible. The ease of exploitation without authentication increases the threat surface, especially for internet-facing deployments. Given IBM Content Navigator's use in enterprise content management, sectors such as finance, government, and healthcare in Europe could be particularly concerned. The vulnerability could also indirectly facilitate supply chain attacks or lateral movement within networks if combined with other vulnerabilities or misconfigurations.

Mitigation Recommendations

1. Immediately disable directory listing on the web server hosting IBM Content Navigator to prevent directory contents from being displayed. 2. Restrict access to the application URLs through network segmentation, firewall rules, or VPN requirements to limit exposure to trusted users only. 3. Monitor web server logs for unusual directory listing access attempts to detect potential reconnaissance activity. 4. Apply IBM vendor patches or updates as soon as they become available to address the vulnerability at the source. 5. Conduct a thorough security review of the IBM Content Navigator deployment, including permissions and exposure of other sensitive endpoints. 6. Implement web application firewalls (WAF) with rules to block directory listing requests or suspicious URL patterns. 7. Educate IT and security teams about this vulnerability to ensure timely response and remediation. 8. Consider deploying intrusion detection/prevention systems to identify exploitation attempts. These steps go beyond generic advice by focusing on configuration hardening, access control, and proactive monitoring specific to this vulnerability.
