A patch is available and has been released in Linux kernel versions 5.15.0-1080.83~20.04.1 and later. Users and administrators should upgrade to these fixed kernel versions or newer to remediate this vulnerability. No additional mitigation is required beyond applying the official kernel updates.
Description
CVE-2025-37738 is a vulnerability in the Linux kernel's ext4 filesystem code where extended attributes (xattrs) past the defined end are not properly ignored. This flaw causes a use-after-free memory error detected by Kernel Address Sanitizer (KASAN) in the function ext4_xattr_inode_dec_ref_all. The issue has been fixed in multiple Linux kernel versions starting from 5.15.0-1080 and later. The vulnerability has a high severity score of 7.8 and could allow local attackers with limited privileges to cause memory corruption leading to potential system compromise.
