A patch is available and should be applied to affected Linux kernel versions. The issue is fixed in Linux kernel versions 6.8.0-1047.48~22.04.1 and later. Users and administrators should update to these fixed versions as provided by their Linux distribution vendors. No additional mitigations are indicated by the vendor advisory.
Description
CVE-2025-40061 is a race condition vulnerability in the Linux kernel's RDMA/rxe subsystem. It occurs when the do_task() function exhausts its iteration budget and sets the task state to TASK_STATE_IDLE without properly checking if the task is in TASK_STATE_DRAINING. This can cause the task to reschedule incorrectly while cleanup is ongoing, potentially leading to a use-after-free condition. The issue was introduced during a migration from tasklets to workqueues and has been fixed by restoring the original behavior to ensure proper task draining. Multiple Linux kernel versions prior to 6.8.0-1050.53~22.04.1 and several specific older versions are affected. A fix is available in Linux kernel versions 6.8.0-1047.48~22.04.1 and later.
