Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: astral-sh
Product: uv

Description

uv is a Python package and project manager written in Rust. From 0.12.7 until 0.12.18, uv wheel extraction on Windows can process a malicious wheel in a way that writes a file outside the installation prefix, including an executable in a directory already present on the user's PATH. Non-Windows hosts are not affected. This issue is fixed in version 0.12.18.

Technical Analysis

The vulnerability in uv (versions >=0.12.7 <0.12.18) on Windows involves improper limitation of pathname during wheel extraction, enabling a malicious wheel to write files outside the installation prefix. This includes the ability to place executables in directories already on the user's PATH environment variable, which could lead to execution of unauthorized code. Non-Windows platforms are not impacted. The flaw is identified as CWE-22 (Path Traversal) and has a CVSS 4.0 base score of 5.9 (medium severity).

Potential Impact

An attacker who can supply a malicious wheel file to the uv package manager on Windows can cause files, including executables, to be written outside the intended installation directory. This may allow execution of arbitrary code with the privileges of the user running uv. Non-Windows systems are not affected by this vulnerability.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade uv to version 0.12.18 or later, where this path traversal vulnerability is fixed. No other mitigation is indicated or required according to the available data.
