Technical Analysis
This vulnerability in imgproxy up to version 4.0.17 is due to improper sanitization in the sanitizeElement function of the processing/svg/svg.go file, specifically in the SVG Handler component. This flaw allows remote attackers to perform cross-site scripting (XSS) attacks by manipulating SVG input. The vulnerability requires no privileges and no user interaction is needed beyond viewing the crafted SVG. The project has been informed but has not issued a fix or response. Exploit code is publicly available.
Potential Impact
Successful exploitation allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary scripts in the context of users viewing the manipulated SVG content, potentially leading to session hijacking, defacement, or other client-side attacks. The vulnerability does not require authentication and can be triggered remotely. However, the impact is limited to client-side script execution and does not affect server integrity or availability.
Mitigation Recommendations
No official fix or patch is currently available, and the vendor has not responded to the issue report. Users should monitor the vendor's advisories for updates. Until a patch is released, avoid processing untrusted SVG content with imgproxy or implement additional input sanitization controls externally to mitigate XSS risks.
