Published: 10/09/2026 (10/09/2026, 14:33:29 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: xerial
Product: snappy-java

Description

CVE-2026-108106 is a high-severity vulnerability in xerial snappy-java before version 1.1.10.9. It involves unbounded memory allocation triggered by attackers supplying crafted compressed input with a large uncompressed length. This can cause the Java Virtual Machine (JVM) to allocate up to 2 GB of memory, leading to OutOfMemoryError and denial of service conditions.

Technical Analysis

The vulnerability in xerial snappy-java (versions prior to 1.1.10.9) allows attackers to cause excessive memory allocation by declaring an uncompressed length in compressed input that is unbounded. Specifically, when functions such as Snappy.uncompress, uncompressString, SnappyInputStream, or SnappyFramedInputStream process crafted input, they may allocate up to 2 GB of memory. This can exhaust JVM memory resources and cause the application to crash with an OutOfMemoryError, resulting in denial of service.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation results in denial of service due to JVM memory exhaustion. The application using snappy-java may crash or become unresponsive because of OutOfMemoryError triggered by the large memory allocation request.

Mitigation Recommendations

A fix is available in xerial snappy-java version 1.1.10.9. Users should upgrade to version 1.1.10.9 or later to remediate this vulnerability. Patch status is confirmed by the affectedVersions field indicating versions before 1.1.10.9 are vulnerable.
