CVE-2026-108714: Allocation of Resources Without Limits or Throttling in modelcontextprotocol kotlin-sdk

Published: 10/11/2026 (10/11/2026, 15:31:02 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: modelcontextprotocol
Product: kotlin-sdk

Description

CVE-2026-108714 is a high-severity vulnerability in the modelcontextprotocol kotlin-sdk (up to version 0.15.0) involving uncontrolled memory allocation. The issue arises because the Application.mcpWebSocket component uses Ktor WebSockets without a maximum frame size limit, allowing remote attackers to send frames with payloads near 2 GiB. This can cause excessive heap memory allocation, leading to denial of service.

Technical Analysis

The modelcontextprotocol kotlin-sdk through version 0.15.0 contains a vulnerability where the Application.mcpWebSocket installs Ktor WebSockets without enforcing a maxFrameSize limit. Remote attackers can exploit this by sending WebSocket frames with headers indicating very large payload sizes (close to 2 GiB), which forces the server to allocate large amounts of memory. This uncontrolled allocation can exhaust server memory resources and cause a denial of service condition.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation allows remote attackers to exhaust server memory by forcing large heap allocations through oversized WebSocket frames. This results in denial of service, potentially disrupting availability of services relying on the kotlin-sdk.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until an official fix is available, consider implementing external WebSocket frame size limits or filtering at network or application layers to prevent oversized frames.
