Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: OW2
Product: ASM

Description

OW2 ASM 5.0 before 9.11 contains an excessive memory allocation vulnerability in ClassReader.readBootstrapMethodsAttribute() that sizes an int array from num_bootstrap_methods without validating attribute_length. Attackers can supply a crafted class file of about 100 bytes that forces roughly 2 GB allocation, causing an OutOfMemoryError that crashes the JVM or consuming thread.

Technical Analysis

The vulnerability in OW2 ASM 5.0 before 9.11 arises from improper validation of attribute_length in ClassReader.readBootstrapMethodsAttribute(). Attackers can craft a class file that triggers allocation of an int array sized by num_bootstrap_methods without bounds checking, resulting in excessive memory allocation (~2 GB). This causes an OutOfMemoryError, potentially crashing the JVM or the thread processing the class file. The flaw is due to missing validation of attribute_length before array sizing.

Potential Impact

Exploitation of this vulnerability can cause denial of service by crashing the Java Virtual Machine or the thread handling the malicious class file due to an OutOfMemoryError. There is no indication of privilege escalation or code execution. The impact is limited to resource exhaustion leading to service disruption.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until a fix is available, avoid processing untrusted or malformed class files with vulnerable versions of OW2 ASM.
