Published: 10/14/2026 (10/14/2026, 14:16:31 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: OW2
Product: ASM

Description

OW2 ASM 3.0 before 9.11 contains an excessive memory allocation vulnerability in Label.addSubroutineRetSuccessors() that fails to enforce the single-RET-per-JSR rule. Attackers can supply a crafted invalid class file with multiple RET instructions for one JSR, triggering a roughly 2 GB allocation that crashes the JVM.

Technical Analysis

The vulnerability in OW2 ASM 3.0 through versions before 9.11 arises from improper handling in the Label.addSubroutineRetSuccessors() method, which does not enforce the constraint that each JSR instruction should have only one RET instruction. This flaw allows an attacker to supply a specially crafted invalid class file containing multiple RET instructions for a single JSR, resulting in an excessive memory allocation of roughly 2 GB. This allocation can cause the Java Virtual Machine to crash, leading to a denial of service condition.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation causes the JVM to crash due to excessive memory allocation, resulting in a denial of service. There is no indication of privilege escalation, code execution, or data leakage. The attack requires local access (AV:L) and user interaction (UI:P), with no privileges required (PR:N).

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until an official fix is available, avoid processing untrusted or malformed class files with OW2 ASM versions 3.0 to before 9.11. Monitor vendor channels for updates and patches addressing this vulnerability.
