Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: libgme
Product: game-music-emu

Description

Game Music Emu (libgme) through 0.6.5 contains a global out-of-bounds read vulnerability in Classic_Emu::mute_voices_ that allows attackers to crash applications by supplying NSF files whose voice count exceeds the 16-entry voice-type table. Attackers can craft an NSF header with chip_flags 0x3F, opened through gme_open_data or gme_open_file, to read past the static array during loading and cause denial of service.

Technical Analysis

Game Music Emu (libgme) versions up to 0.6.5 contain a global out-of-bounds read vulnerability in the Classic_Emu::mute_voices_ function. The flaw occurs when NSF files with a voice count exceeding the fixed 16-entry voice-type table are processed. Attackers can craft NSF headers with chip_flags 0x3F and open them via gme_open_data or gme_open_file, causing reads beyond the static array bounds during loading. This results in application crashes, constituting a denial of service condition.

Potential Impact

The vulnerability allows attackers to cause denial of service by crashing applications that use libgme to process maliciously crafted NSF files. There is no indication of code execution or data corruption beyond the crash. No known exploits are reported in the wild.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until a patch is available, avoid processing untrusted NSF files or implement input validation to reject files with voice counts exceeding 16.
