Technical Analysis

Apache Traffic Server versions from 8.0.0 through 8.1.11, 9.0.0 through 9.2.15, 10.0.0 through 10.1.4, and version 10.2.0 are vulnerable to an uncontrolled resource consumption issue (CWE-400). The vulnerability arises when an attacker sends a truncated HTTP/2 Content-Length header, which can be used to exhaust the worker pool of an HTTP/1.1 origin server, potentially causing denial of service. This flaw does not impact confidentiality or integrity but results in high impact on availability. The issue is addressed by upgrading to Apache Traffic Server versions 9.2.16, 10.1.5, or 10.2.1.

Potential Impact

The vulnerability allows an attacker to cause denial of service by exhausting the worker pool of an HTTP/1.1 origin server through malformed HTTP/2 requests. This results in high availability impact but does not affect confidentiality or integrity.

Mitigation Recommendations

Users should upgrade Apache Traffic Server to versions 9.2.16, 10.1.5, or 10.2.1 where this issue is fixed. No other mitigation or temporary workaround is indicated.
