CVE-2026-111817: CWE-400 Uncontrolled Resource Consumption in Apache Software Foundation Apache Traffic Server
Description
Apache Traffic Server contains a vulnerability where it can stall a chunked transfer with trailers removed, causing uncontrolled resource consumption until the connection times out. This occurs because the server waits for trailer bytes that have already been dropped. The issue affects specific versions where trailer dropping is enabled by default or manually enabled. Upgrading to versions 10.1.5 or 10.2.1 resolves the issue.

Technical Analysis
CVE-2026-111817 is an uncontrolled resource consumption vulnerability (CWE-400) in Apache Traffic Server. The server can stall processing of chunked transfers when trailers are removed due to the configuration proxy.config.http.drop_chunked_trailers. When this setting is enabled (default in 10.x), the server waits indefinitely for trailer bytes it has already discarded, leading to resource exhaustion until connection timeout. Affected versions include 8.1.11 (if enabled), 9.2.5 through 9.2.15, 10.0.0 through 10.1.4, and 10.2.0. The issue is fixed in versions 10.1.5 and 10.2.1.
Potential Impact
The vulnerability can cause Apache Traffic Server to stall connections and consume resources unnecessarily, leading to denial of service conditions. There is no confidentiality or integrity impact reported. The CVSS score is 5.3 (medium severity), indicating a moderate impact primarily on availability.
Mitigation Recommendations
Users should upgrade affected Apache Traffic Server versions to 10.1.5 or 10.2.1 where the issue is fixed. If upgrading is not immediately possible, disabling the proxy.config.http.drop_chunked_trailers setting (if enabled) can mitigate the risk. No other vendor advisories indicate alternative mitigations.
