CVE-2026-112900: CWE-78: Improper Neutralization of Special Elements used in an OS Command ('OS Command Injection') in python-pillow Pillow
Description
Pillow, a Python imaging library, has a critical OS command injection vulnerability in versions from 2.6.0 up to but not including 13.0.0. The vulnerability arises when Pillow invokes Ghostscript for EPS input, passing a user-controlled filename without sanitization. This allows an attacker to inject Ghostscript arguments by using filenames starting with a hyphen. Exploitation requires control over an argument-file referenced by a leading @, enabling arbitrary command execution. The issue is fixed in version 13.0.0.

Technical Analysis
CVE-2026-112900 describes an OS command injection vulnerability in the Pillow library's EpsImagePlugin.Ghostscript component. From versions 2.6.0 through 12.x, Pillow passes a caller-controlled filename argument to Ghostscript without converting it to a safe absolute path. Filenames beginning with a hyphen can be interpreted as Ghostscript options, enabling argument injection. Full arbitrary command execution requires an argument-file (@filename) controlled by the attacker containing additional Ghostscript arguments. The vulnerability is resolved in Pillow 13.0.0.
Potential Impact
An attacker who can control the filename passed to Pillow's Ghostscript invocation can inject arbitrary Ghostscript arguments, potentially leading to arbitrary command execution. This can result in full compromise of the system running the vulnerable Pillow version. The CVSS 4.0 score is 9.2 (critical), reflecting network attack vector, low complexity, no privileges or user interaction required, and high impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
Mitigation Recommendations
This vulnerability is fixed in Pillow version 13.0.0. Users should upgrade to version 13.0.0 or later to remediate the issue. No other mitigation or temporary workaround is indicated in the provided data.
