Vendor/Project: Rockwell Automation
Product: CompactLogix, ControlLogix

Description

CVE-2026-11317 is a high-severity denial of service vulnerability in Rockwell Automation CompactLogix and ControlLogix devices. The issue arises when a specially crafted CIP message triggers a fault, causing a major nonrecoverable fault (MNRF) that requires a program download to recover. Devices with less memory are more susceptible to this fault. No patch or official remediation has been confirmed at this time.

Technical Analysis

This vulnerability (CVE-2026-11317) involves improper resource shutdown or release (CWE-404) in Rockwell Automation CompactLogix and ControlLogix products. When a crafted Common Industrial Protocol (CIP) message is sent to affected devices, it can cause a denial of service by triggering a major nonrecoverable fault. The fault is more likely on devices with limited memory, and recovery requires a program download. The vulnerability has a CVSS 4.0 base score of 8.7, indicating high severity. No vendor advisory or patch information is currently available.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation results in a denial of service condition causing a major nonrecoverable fault on affected devices. This fault disrupts device operation and requires manual recovery via program download. Devices with less memory are at higher risk of being affected.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until a fix is available, monitor for crafted CIP messages and consider network-level controls to restrict untrusted access to affected devices. Recovery from the fault requires a program download.
