AI-suggested
A fix is available in OpenRemote core version 1.31.0. Users should upgrade to version 1.31.0 or later to remediate this vulnerability. No additional mitigation steps are indicated by the vendor advisory.
Description
OpenRemote core versions before 1.31.0 have an authorization bypass vulnerability that allows realm administrators to impersonate gateways in other realms. This occurs because the GatewayService only verifies the gateway ID without validating the associated realm. Attackers with WRITE:ADMIN privileges in one realm can create a service user named after another realm's gateway ID, enabling them to overwrite assets and establish SSH tunnels into the target realm's local network. The vulnerability has a low CVSS 4.0 base score of 2.1 and does not have known exploits in the wild.
Impact
An attacker with WRITE:ADMIN privileges in one realm can impersonate gateways in other realms, potentially overwriting assets and establishing unauthorized SSH tunnels into the local network of those realms. This could lead to unauthorized access and manipulation of resources across realm boundaries. However, the overall severity is low, and no active exploitation has been reported.
Summary
CVE-2026-116184 is an authorization bypass vulnerability in OpenRemote core prior to version 1.31.0. The flaw arises from GatewayService's insufficient validation, which checks only the gateway ID but not the realm ownership. This allows attackers with administrative write permissions in one realm to impersonate gateways in other realms by creating service users named after those gateways. Consequently, they can overwrite descendant assets and open SSH tunnels into the local network of the impersonated gateway's realm.
