AI-suggested

Users should upgrade to Botan version 3.13.0 or later, where this issue is fixed. No other mitigations are indicated or required as the fix is official and available. Applications relying on affected versions should prioritize updating to ensure proper entropy sourcing and secure random number generation.

Description

CVE-2026-118765 is a vulnerability in the Botan C++ cryptography library affecting versions from 3.7.0 up to but not including 3.13.0. The flaw involves incorrect usage of seeds in the AutoSeeded_RNG pseudo-random number generator. Specifically, calling AutoSeeded_RNG::clear() followed by randomize with an empty output buffer while the generator is unseeded can cause it to mark itself as seeded without properly consulting the entropy source. On builds lacking BOTAN_HAS_SYSTEM_RNG, the fallback entropy source relies only on predictable values like the clock and process ID, potentially leading to predictable random output. This issue is fixed in version 3.13.0.
