Description

CVE-2026-120689 is a vulnerability in HDF5 versions prior to 2.3.0 involving uncontrolled recursion in the H5B__iterate_helper() function. This occurs when iterating a version 1 B-tree where a crafted file contains a child pointer that refers back to a node already in the cache, causing unbounded recursion and stack exhaustion. The issue can be triggered by calling H5Gget_info() or H5Gget_num_objs() on a maliciously crafted file, leading to a denial of service (application crash).
