AI-suggested

Users should monitor vendor advisories for updates. Mitigation includes restricting or reviewing user capabilities to submit image HTML content and disabling or carefully configuring front-end content plugins like bbPress that grant subscriber-level users the ability to publish image-bearing content. Applying strict input validation and output escaping in the plugin code is recommended once a fix is available.

Description

The WP ImageViewer WordPress plugin up to version 3.0.2 contains a stored DOM-based cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability via the 'img.alt' parameter. Authenticated users with subscriber-level access or higher can inject malicious scripts that execute when other users view the affected pages. Exploitation requires a front-end content plugin like bbPress to grant the necessary capabilities or contributor-level access with permission to submit image HTML in posts. The vulnerability arises from insufficient input sanitization and output escaping.
