Published: 08/02/2026 (08/02/2026, 06:00:11 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Product: login-social

Description

The login-social WordPress plugin through version 1.0.4 contains an improper authentication vulnerability. It fails to validate password-reset requests against a reset key or verify the requester's identity. Additionally, it issues authentication sessions based on unverified third-party sign-in data. This allows unauthenticated attackers to reset any user's password or log in as any existing user, including administrators, potentially leading to full site takeover.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-16261 describes an improper authentication vulnerability (CWE-287) in the login-social WordPress plugin up to version 1.0.4. The plugin does not validate password-reset requests properly and issues authentication sessions from unverified third-party sign-in data. As a result, attackers without authentication can reset passwords for any user or log in as any user, including administrators, enabling complete control over the affected WordPress site.

Potential Impact

An unauthenticated attacker can reset passwords for any user or authenticate as any existing user, including administrators. This leads to full site compromise, allowing the attacker to take over the WordPress installation and perform any actions permitted to the compromised accounts.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until an official fix is available, avoid using the login-social plugin or restrict its usage. Monitor vendor channels for updates and apply patches promptly once released.
