A patch is available and should be applied to affected Linux kernel versions. The Ubuntu security advisory USN-8567-1 provides updates that fix this and other kernel vulnerabilities. Users should update their systems to the fixed kernel versions to remediate this issue. No additional mitigation steps are indicated by the vendor advisory.
Description
A vulnerability in the Linux kernel's ext4 filesystem code allows an out-of-bounds read due to improper validation of index pointers in the extent tree. Specifically, ext4_ext_correct_indexes() does not validate p_idx bounds before accessing them, which can lead to slab-out-of-bounds reads if the on-disk extent header is corrupted or maliciously crafted. This issue has been fixed by adding proper validation checks. The vulnerability is rated high severity with a CVSS score of 7.8 and affects specific Linux kernel versions. A patch is available.
