Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: HKUDS
Product: OpenHarness

Description

OpenHarness prior to commit dd1d235 contains a command injection vulnerability that allows remote gateway users with chat access to invoke sensitive administrative commands by exploiting insufficient distinction between local-only and remote-safe commands in the gateway handler. Attackers can execute administrative commands such as /permissions full_auto through remote chat sessions to change permission modes of a running OpenHarness instance without operator authorization.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-40502 is a command injection vulnerability in HKUDS OpenHarness before commit dd1d235. The vulnerability arises from insufficient distinction between local-only and remote-safe commands in the gateway handler, allowing remote users with chat access to invoke administrative commands such as /permissions full_auto. This missing authorization (CWE-862) enables unauthorized remote execution of sensitive commands, potentially compromising the security and control of the OpenHarness instance.

Potential Impact

An attacker with remote chat access can execute administrative commands on the OpenHarness instance without operator authorization. This can lead to unauthorized changes in permission modes, potentially allowing further unauthorized actions or disruption of service. The vulnerability has a high CVSS score of 8.7, indicating significant impact if exploited.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. No official fix or temporary workaround has been provided at this time. Users should monitor vendor communications for updates and consider restricting remote chat access until a fix is available.
