Technical Analysis

This vulnerability arises from an incorrect implementation of authentication caching in the Rancher GitHub authentication provider's team membership expansion logic. Specifically, Rancher versions 2.13.0 through 2.13.5 and 2.14.0 through 2.14.1 may grant principal access to any logged-in user due to this flaw. The issue is classified under CWE-303 (Incorrect Implementation of Authentication Algorithm). The CVSS v3.1 base score is 8.8, indicating a high severity with network attack vector, low attack complexity, requiring low privileges, no user interaction, and impacts on confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

Potential Impact

Exploitation of this vulnerability could allow an authenticated user with low privileges to gain unauthorized principal access within Rancher, potentially leading to full compromise of confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the affected system components. This elevates the risk of unauthorized access and control over Rancher-managed resources.

Mitigation Recommendations

No official patch or remediation level is currently stated in the available data. Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the SUSE vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until a fix is available, restrict access to Rancher instances to trusted users only and monitor for unusual authentication behavior related to GitHub authentication.
