Technical Analysis

OpenLearnX versions before 2.0.3 contain an OS command injection vulnerability (CWE-78) in its code execution environment. This flaw allows an attacker with at least limited privileges (PR:L) to execute arbitrary commands remotely without user interaction (UI:N), potentially escaping the sandbox and gaining full control over the affected system. The vulnerability has a CVSS 3.1 base score of 8.8, indicating high impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The issue was addressed and patched in OpenLearnX version 2.0.3.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary OS commands on the affected system, bypassing sandbox restrictions. This can lead to full system compromise, including unauthorized data access, modification, and denial of service. The vulnerability affects confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the system.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade OpenLearnX to version 2.0.3 or later, where this vulnerability has been patched. Since this is an open-source product and not a cloud service, applying the official patch is required to remediate the issue. No vendor advisory was provided, so check the official OpenLearnX release notes or repository for the patch details.
