Published: 09/17/2026 (09/17/2026, 17:09:48 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: alanxz
Product: rabbitmq-c

Description

rabbitmq-c is a C-language AMQP client library for RabbitMQ. Prior to 0.16.0, a malicious AMQP server can send an undersized HEADER or METHOD frame during client login and cause unsigned size_t underflow in amqp_handle_input() in librabbitmq/amqp_connection.c. The parser subtracts HEADER_SIZE, fixed per-frame fields, and FOOTER_SIZE from state->target_size without first checking the minimum frame length. The wrapped encoded.len value is passed through amqp_decode_properties() to amqp_decode_table_internal(), where it defeats bounds checks and causes an out-of-bounds read and process crash. An on-path attacker can also trigger the issue when AMQP traffic is not protected by TLS with certificate validation. The demonstrated impact is denial of service, with no reliable memory disclosure or code execution shown. This issue is fixed in version 0.16.0.

Technical Analysis

The vulnerability in rabbitmq-c (a C AMQP client library) arises from improper validation of frame lengths during AMQP client login. Specifically, the parser subtracts fixed frame sizes from a target size without verifying minimum frame length, causing an unsigned integer underflow. This underflow results in a wrapped length value that bypasses bounds checks in amqp_decode_properties() and amqp_decode_table_internal(), leading to an out-of-bounds read and process crash. Exploitation requires a malicious AMQP server or an on-path attacker intercepting unprotected AMQP traffic. The demonstrated impact is denial of service, with no evidence of memory disclosure or code execution. The issue is resolved in rabbitmq-c version 0.16.0.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation causes a denial of service via process crash due to out-of-bounds read. There is no confirmed impact on confidentiality or integrity, as no reliable memory disclosure or code execution has been demonstrated. The vulnerability can be triggered remotely by a malicious AMQP server or an attacker positioned on the network path if TLS with certificate validation is not used.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade rabbitmq-c to version 0.16.0 or later, where this vulnerability is fixed. Additionally, ensure AMQP traffic is protected by TLS with certificate validation to prevent on-path attackers from exploiting this issue. No other mitigations are indicated.
