CVE-2026-45686: CWE-190: Integer Overflow or Wraparound in open-telemetry opentelemetry-ebpf-instrumentation
OpenTelemetry eBPF Instrumentation provides eBPF instrumentation based on the OpenTelemetry standard. From version 0.7.0 to before version 0.9.0, a remotely reachable integer overflow in OBI's memcached text protocol parser can crash the OBI process and cause denial of service. When parsing memcached storage commands such as set, add, replace, append, prepend, or cas, OBI accepts extremely large <bytes> values and adds the payload delimiter length without checking for overflow. A crafted request with <bytes> set to math.MaxInt or math.MaxInt-1 causes the computed payload length to wrap negative and triggers a runtime panic in LargeBufferReader.Peek. This issue has been patched in version 0.9.0.

Technical Summary
The vulnerability (CVE-2026-45686) affects OpenTelemetry eBPF Instrumentation's memcached text protocol parser in versions 0.7.0 to before 0.9.0. When parsing memcached storage commands such as set, add, replace, append, prepend, or cas, the parser accepts very large <bytes> values and adds the payload delimiter length without checking for integer overflow. This causes the computed payload length to wrap around to a negative value, triggering a runtime panic in LargeBufferReader.Peek and crashing the OBI process, leading to denial of service. The vulnerability is classified as CWE-190 (Integer Overflow or Wraparound) and has a CVSS 3.1 base score of 7.5 (high severity). The issue has been patched in version 0.9.0.
Potential Impact
Successful exploitation results in a denial of service by crashing the OpenTelemetry eBPF Instrumentation process remotely. There is no impact on confidentiality or integrity reported. No known exploits in the wild have been documented.
Mitigation Recommendations
Upgrade OpenTelemetry eBPF Instrumentation to version 0.9.0 or later, where this integer overflow vulnerability has been fixed. Patch status is confirmed by the vendor's versioning information. No additional mitigations are specified.
