CVE-2026-46491: CWE-22: Improper Limitation of a Pathname to a Restricted Directory ('Path Traversal') in simplesamlphp simplesamlphp-module-casserver

VulnerabilityCVE-2026-46491cvecve-2026-46491cwe-22
Published: 06/09/2026 (06/09/2026, 23:00:11 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: simplesamlphp
Product: simplesamlphp-module-casserver

Description

SimpleSAMLphp-casserver is a CAS 1.0 and 2.0 compliant CAS server in the form of a SimpleSAMLphp module. Prior to version 7.0.3, simplesamlphp-module-casserver builds file paths for the file-based CAS ticket store by directly concatenating the configured ticket directory with an attacker-controlled ticket identifier. Public CAS validation/proxy endpoints pass attacker-controlled ticket / pgt query parameters into this store. In deployments using FileSystemTicketStore, a remote attacker can use path traversal sequences such as ../target.serialized to make the CAS server read and unserialize files outside the ticket directory. In the CAS 1.0 validation flow, the same attacker-selected path is also passed to deleteTicket() immediately after getTicket() returns, which can delete the target file when it is readable by the PHP process, deletable under the PHP process filesystem permissions, and unserializes to a value compatible with the ?array return type. This issue has been patched in version 7.0.3.

Technical Analysis

The simplesamlphp-module-casserver, a CAS server module for SimpleSAMLphp, prior to version 7.0.3, improperly limits pathname access when handling file-based CAS ticket storage. It concatenates the configured ticket directory with attacker-controlled ticket identifiers without proper sanitization. This allows remote attackers to perform path traversal attacks by supplying crafted ticket or pgt parameters, enabling reading and unserializing files outside the intended directory. Additionally, in the CAS 1.0 validation flow, the attacker-controlled path can be used to delete arbitrary files if the PHP process has sufficient permissions. The vulnerability is addressed in version 7.0.3.

Potential Impact

Remote attackers can exploit this vulnerability to read and unserialize arbitrary files on the server, potentially leading to information disclosure or further code execution if malicious serialized data is processed. They can also delete files accessible to the PHP process, impacting integrity and availability. The vulnerability has a high severity with a CVSS score of 8.6, reflecting its potential for significant impact without requiring authentication.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade simplesamlphp-module-casserver to version 7.0.3 or later, where this path traversal vulnerability has been patched. No other mitigations are indicated by the vendor advisory. Patch status is confirmed by the version fix information.
