Published: Tue Jun 09 2026 (06/09/2026, 23:46:21 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: nimiq
Product: core-rs-albatross

Description

A denial-of-service vulnerability exists in nimiq core-rs-albatross prior to version 1. 4. 0. The issue arises in the Ed25519 multisig delinearization code path where invalid public keys cause a panic due to an assertion failure. This occurs because Ed25519PublicKey::delinearize() calls unwrap() on curve point decompression without verifying curve membership, allowing invalid keys to crash the process. The vulnerability has been patched in version 1. 4. 0.

Technical Analysis

Nimiq core-rs-albatross versions before 1.4.0 contain a reachable assertion vulnerability (CWE-617) in the Ed25519 multisig delinearization code. The function Ed25519PublicKey::delinearize() invokes unwrap() on the result of curve point decompression, which panics if the input 32-byte public key does not represent a valid point on the Ed25519 curve. Since Ed25519PublicKey construction only checks byte length and not curve membership, invalid keys can reach this code path and cause the hosting process to crash, resulting in a denial-of-service condition. This flaw was fixed in version 1.4.0.

Potential Impact

An attacker can cause a denial-of-service by providing invalid Ed25519 public keys that trigger a panic in the delinearization code path, crashing the process hosting the nimiq core-rs-albatross component. There is no impact on confidentiality or integrity, only availability is affected.

Mitigation Recommendations

This vulnerability is fixed in nimiq core-rs-albatross version 1.4.0. Users should upgrade to version 1.4.0 or later to remediate this issue. Patch status is confirmed by the vendor advisory stating the fix is included in version 1.4.0.
