Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: duck-organization
Product: quest-bot

Description

Quest Bot is an opensource modern Discord Bot built for moderation, utilities and support. Prior to version 1.0.5, the latest release suppresses mentions in several moderation commands, but /unban and /unwarn still echo user-controlled reason text in public bot messages without allowedMentions. A moderator can use @everyone or @here in the reason and make the bot send a mass ping. This issue has been patched in version 1.0.5.

Technical Analysis

The quest-bot before version 1.0.5 fails to properly encode or escape output in certain moderation commands, specifically /unban and /unwarn. While other moderation commands suppress mentions, these two commands echo user-controlled reason text without using allowedMentions, enabling a moderator to trigger mass pings by including @everyone or @here in the reason. This is classified as CWE-116: Improper Encoding or Escaping of Output. The vulnerability has been addressed in version 1.0.5.

Potential Impact

A moderator with permission to use /unban or /unwarn commands can cause the bot to send mass pings to all users or online users in a Discord server by including @everyone or @here in the reason text. This can lead to unwanted notifications and potential disruption in the server. The CVSS 4.0 score is 2.3, indicating low severity with limited impact and requiring low privileges.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade quest-bot to version 1.0.5 or later, where this issue has been fixed by properly suppressing mentions in the /unban and /unwarn commands. No additional mitigation is necessary once updated.
