Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: pdm-project
Product: pdm

Description

A path traversal vulnerability exists in pdm versions prior to 2.27.0 in the write_to_fs function. This flaw allows a malicious wheel to write arbitrary files by bypassing path validation. The issue is fixed in version 2.27.0.

Technical Analysis

The pdm Python package manager versions before 2.27.0 contain a path traversal vulnerability (CWE-22) in the InstallDestination.write_to_fs() method. This method overrides a base class implementation that safely validated paths using Path.resolve() and is_relative_to(), but instead uses os.path.join() without validation. Consequently, a malicious wheel file can include traversal entries to write files outside the intended directory. The vulnerability has been addressed in pdm version 2.27.0.

Potential Impact

An attacker can craft a malicious wheel package that exploits the path traversal vulnerability to write arbitrary files on the filesystem during installation. This can lead to unauthorized file overwrite or creation, potentially compromising system integrity or security. The CVSS 4.0 score is 8.4 (high severity), reflecting the potential for significant impact with low attack complexity and no privileges required.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade pdm to version 2.27.0 or later, where this path traversal vulnerability has been fixed. No other mitigations are specified or required.
