A fix for this vulnerability is available and has been applied in the Linux kernel. Users should update to a fixed kernel version that includes the patches referenced by the Linux kernel commits and Red Hat advisory. No additional mitigations are required once the system is updated. Red Hat customers should consult the Red Hat advisory for specific fixed versions and update accordingly.
Description
CVE-2026-53148 is a high-severity vulnerability in the Linux kernel's Thunderbolt driver where a malicious peer can cause an out-of-bounds write by sending a crafted response with an oversized length field. This leads to memory corruption, potentially allowing denial of service or arbitrary code execution. The flaw arises because the driver copies data based on a length field without properly clamping it to the allocated buffer size. The issue has been fixed by clamping the copy length to prevent exceeding the buffer allocation.
